NMU Hockey loses opener

MARQUETTE- Sometimes the weekend never goes the way you want it to. Other times it just gets off to a bad start. For the Northern Michigan University Men’s hockey team, the hope is that this weekend doesn’t turn into disaster to start the season. After a 5-3 loss to Michigan Tech on Friday, The Wildcats are looking to start the weekend off right. As the boys in yellow and green travel to Minnesota to take on the Duluth Bulldogs, the goal has to be not just to survive. With top notch competition, such as Bemijdi State making the trip to the upper penninsula next weekend, the goal has must be to come out with reckless abandon. Something that didn’t happen on Friday.

After taking a one goal lead early in the game, the Wildcats defense collapsed. The Huskies scored three unanswered goals and never looked back.  Brett Olson and Jordan Baker led the offense for the Huskies. Olson tagged on five points, including a hat trick. According to Northern Michigan University head coach Walt Kyle the Tech defense did a great job of shutting down the NMU’s top scorers:

“Tech did a great job blocking shots,” NMU coach Walt Kyle said. “We had a lot of guys we expect to score for us to not really compete very hard tonight.” (The Daily Mining Gazette )

Hopefully the offense turns it up as they roll into Duluth. Power plays will be key, and so will goaltender play. The Tech offense controlled the puck, taking nearly twice as many shots as the Wildcats. Something that has to be changed for tomorrow’s match up.
